Measuring Tree Trunks

What skill did I find MOST lacking in 5th and 6th graders? The ability to measure! So let's get them started young!

This is also a fun activity if you just want to go outside and get some fresh air! Grab a flexible tape measure, pen, and recording document and have some fun!

I'm guessing your trees will vary between around 20 inches in circumference to maybe 80! Make your scale accordingly! (Maybe count by 10's or 20's?)

The circumference of the tree is actually called "Tree girth" and is typically measured at 4.5 feet, but ours will probably be a little bit shorter so we'll call it circumference for now. This will help them ease into learning about circumference and diameter, as well as using pi to find the diameter of trees,...but more on that later!
